Court Orders X To Reveal Investors, Russian Allies Revealed
Putin’s Oligarchs Behind Musk’s X (Twitter) Takeover?
In a significant legal move, a Federal Court in California has compelled X (formerly Twitter) to disclose the identities of investors involved in Elon Musk‘s acquisition of the platform. Among the revealed names is a fund linked to Russian oligarchs with close ties to Vladimir Putin.
The investor list, comprising over a hundred entities, includes high-profile individuals from finance, entertainment, and even a Saudi royal. However, one entry has sparked particular concern: the 8VC Opportunities Fund II, associated with the sons of sanctioned Russian oligarchs, Petr Aven and Vadim Moszkowicz.
Putin’s Oligarchs in the Mix
Petr Aven, a billionaire founder of Alfa Group and one of Putin’s key allies, is currently under sanctions due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Vadim Moszkowicz, a wealthy figure in Russia’s agricultural sector and another close associate of Putin, also faces Western sanctions. Their sons, Denis Aven and Jack Moszkowicz, are listed as members of 8VC’s staff.
Political Backlash and Accusations
X has remained silent on the matter, but Joe Lonsdale, the founder of 8VC, dismissed the controversy as a politically motivated attack. Lonsdale, known for his support of Donald Trump, defended his team, calling Jack Moszkowicz a “superstar” and praising Vadim Moszkowicz as a “successful agricultural leader in Russia.”
Despite Lonsdale’s defense, the connections have raised eyebrows, especially as the U.S. government increases scrutiny on foreign ties within the tech industry. While there is no direct evidence linking the oligarchs to the fund, experts like Daniel Fried, a former U.S. State Department official, caution that hiring the children of sanctioned individuals demands rigorous due diligence.
Implications and International Reactions
The revelations have provoked strong reactions, particularly in Europe. Belgian politician Guy Verhofstadt commented, “Putin’s cronies helped Musk buy Twitter,” linking this to Musk’s controversial stances on Crimea and his support for Trump. Verhofstadt urged the U.S. to take action, suggesting these ties may influence Musk’s decisions.
