AFCON Qualifiers: Super Eagles Open Camp Ahead of Crucial Matches

Ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, the Super Eagles have opened their training camp on Monday, October 2, in Uyo.

Players have begun reporting to camp as preparations kick-off for the important upcoming matches.

The camp will host the 23 invited players who will prepare for the AFCON qualifiers, starting with a match against the Benin Republic on September 7th at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.

Three days later, the Super Eagles will travel to Kigali for a showdown with the Amavubi (the Wasps) of Rwanda.

The Super Eagles previously suffered a 2-1 loss against Benin Republic in the World Cup qualifiers earlier this year, making this an opportunity for the team to seek revenge against their former coach, Gernot Rohr.

Players in Camp:

As of 10 a.m. on Monday morning, seven players have already arrived in Uyo.

The early arrivals include:

William Troost-Ekong, Ola Aina, Semi Ajayi, Ademola Lookman, Olisa Ndah, Taiwo Awoniyi, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.

More players, including South Africa-based goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, Victor Osimhen, and former Bendel Insurance goalkeeper Amas Obasogie, are expected to join the camp later today.

Coaching Setup

Augustine Eguavoen is set to lead the team after the arrangement with the intended new coach, Bruno Labbadia, fell through due to stringent German tax laws.

Eguavoen, who is familiar with the Super Eagles setup, will once again take charge, bringing his experience to bear in these crucial fixtures.

In addition, Eguavoen has announced NPFL champions coach Fidelis Ilechukwu and Daniel Ogunmodede as his assistant coaches for the qualifiers.

Both coaches bring a wealth of experience from the Nigerian league, with Ogunmodede’s Remo Stars finished second in the NPFL, while Ilechukwu led Rangers International to the league title.

Their addition to the coaching staff is expected to provide a significant boost as the team aims to go back to winning ways, winning both matches in the qualifiers.
