Serena Williams’ husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, revealed his recent health scare in an Instagram post this week.
In a post from Thursday, November 28, Ohanian revealed he had half of his thyroid removed, sharing a photo of himself in a hospital bed with a gown, cap, and a significant scar on his neck. The 41-year-old noted that the removal was due to “tracking some suspicious nodules on [his] thyroid for the last 4 years.”
The nodules continued to grow over the years, with Ohanian’s most recent biopsy showing that there was a large probability of becoming cancerous, and he wanted to take preventive measures. He also pointed out in the caption that cancer runs in his family, adding to the seriousness of why he needed the removal.
“My mom had breast cancer around this age (41) and then ultimately died from brain cancer a decade or so later,” Ohanian wrote. “I hate cancer.”
“I wasn’t gonna take any chances; the surgery was smooth and I’m extra grateful this Thanksgiving because I got the call this morning that my now-removed-half-of-thyroid was indeed full of some gnarly nodules that were very likely to become cancerous,” he added. “The worst part tbh has been not being able to lift for 2 weeks but big fella will be back at it next week and I took my girls to Disney World this week so life is wonderful.”
Ohanian ended his post with a warning to any men who follow him: “Make those doctor’s appointments — especially if y’all are dads. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.”
Many fellow celebs and fans wished him a speedy recovery. “Glad the surgery went well,” Olympian Lindsey Vonn commented. “I am a thyroid cancer survivor. Glad you did it,” wrote a fan.
