Benin Captain Steve Mounie Condemns Poor Treatment in Libya

Steve Mounie, captain of Benin’s national football team, the Cheetahs, has criticised the poor treatment his team faced during their trip to Libya for their final 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match.

Benin secured their place in AFCON 2025 with a 0-0 draw against Libya in Tripoli, finishing second in Group B on goal difference ahead of Rwanda. However, their joy was overshadowed by hostile actions from Libyan fans and security officials.

Speaking about the experience, Mounie described the atmosphere as like a “war zone.” He noted that Libyan fans whistled disrespectfully during Benin’s national anthem before the match.

After the game, fans threw objects at the Benin players. Security personnel reportedly attacked the team’s bus, injuring head coach Gernot Rohr and several staff members.

Despite these issues, Mounie praised his team for their determination and pride in qualifying for the tournament.

These incidents highlight the increasing challenges African teams face when playing in Libya, raising concerns about safety and sportsmanship in such matches.
