Charles Etim makes NPFL debut as Akwa United hold Lobi Stars on matchday one

Charles Etim, a former Nigeria U-17 and U-20 standout, made his highly anticipated Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) debut for Akwa United in a goalless draw against Lobi Stars at the Lafia City Stadium on Monday, September 9, 2024.

Etim was named in central defense alongside fellow new signing Endurance Edebidiri by Akwa United’s head coach Baba Ganaru. The duo helped the Promise Keepers maintain a solid defensive performance, keeping Lobi Stars FC at bay despite a flurry of attacking attempts.

The match saw Akwa United create several chances to snatch the win, including a last-minute opportunity for substitute Mare Gibson, who failed to convert a one-on-one situation that could have secured maximum points on the road.

While the 0-0 draw was a fair result, Akwa United will feel they missed an opportunity to start their campaign with a victory. However, the solid defensive display, led by Etim, gives the former NPFL champions confidence as they embark on a quest to reclaim their status as top-three contenders in the 2024-25 season.

Etim, who joined from Blessed Stars Football Academy in Uyo, brings versatility and experience from his national team stints, and he is expected to be a key player for Akwa United throughout the season. Alongside 16 other new signings, his presence reinforces the club’s ambition to build a formidable squad capable of challenging for the NPFL title.

Akwa United will now turn their focus to their next fixture, hoping to capitalize on their strong start and convert their chances as they look to push for silverware in the 2024-25 NPFL season.
