Ekong Wades in on Super Eagles Coaching Debate

Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong has weighed in on the ongoing debate about whether a foreign coach is the best option for Nigeria’s men’s football team.

Ekong, who won the AFCON 2023 MVP Award in Ivory Coast, is one of the most respected figures in the Super Eagles’ dressing room, boasting nearly a decade of experience with the national team.

When asked about his thoughts on the coaching situation, he emphasized the value of having a Nigerian coach.

“I don’t think we look at where the coach is from, but I’ve always said it, having a coach from Nigeria is an advantage. Someone who has been in our shoes and walked the path we’re in, and that adds experience to us.

“Eventually the responsibility lies on us (players), because the coach can prepare us but when the game starts, there are no guarantees.

“We can’t say we’ll win or lose. We can only guarantee a performance that we’ll be proud of, and that Nigerians deserve,” said Ekong during the pre-match press conference ahead of Nigeria’s clash against Benin Republic.

Despite winning the Greek Super League with PAOK Thessaloniki last season, Ekong made a surprise move this summer, joining newly promoted Saudi Arabian side Al Kholood after just one year with the Greek champions.

Ekong has not played for Nigeria since the AFCON 2023 final due to an injury but is set to make his comeback in this crucial AFCON 2025 opener.

Nigeria will play Benin Republic at 5 p.m., hoping for redemption after losing 2-1 to the Cheetahs during the World Cup qualifiers.
