‘He’s a Legend’ – Akor Adams Opens Up About His Role Model at Montpellier

Montpellier striker Akor Adams has revealed how former Super Eagles star John Utaka has been instrumental in his development since his move to the French club in August 2023.

Adams joined Montpellier following a prolific spell at Norwegian side Lillestrøm, where he netted 28 goals and provided seven assists in 50 appearances.

Adams’ arrival followed a solid campaign for Montpellier last season, where he scored 10 goals and provided two assists in 33 games across all competitions.

However, Montpellier are struggling this season, languishing at the bottom of Ligue 1 with just eight points from 13 games.

Despite the team’s struggles, Adams has managed to register three goals and two assists in 11 games, a decent start to life in France.

He attributes much of his progress to the mentorship of Utaka, who enjoyed a successful stint at Montpellier from 2011 to 2013, winning the Ligue 1 title.

“John Utaka is a legend. His influence was also part of my decision to come to Montpellier,” Adams told Tribal Football.

“He had played for the club, he has won the championship with the club and he is very much adored by the fans.

For me, following in those footsteps knowing that he laid the path for a young player, I was glad to take the offer to sign for Montepellier.”

Utaka, who represented Nigeria at two World Cups and three Africa Cup of Nations, earning 44 caps and scoring six goals, continues to guide Adams with valuable advice.

“He played as a striker as I am, after games we do have discussions on what I should have done, what he thinks should have the best option. We have these interactions striker to striker, this is so I can improve. It is a huge privilege to have him among the coaching staff at Montepellier,” Adams added.

As Montpellier battles to avoid relegation, Adams will aim to increase his goal contributions and help steer the club out of trouble.
