Janne Andersson explains why he rejected Super Eagles Job

Former Sweden coach Janne Andersson has revealed why he turned down the opportunity to manage Nigeria’s Super Eagles. Despite strong interest from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Andersson, 62, declined the offer to take charge of the national team.

Andersson has been without a job since stepping down as Sweden’s head coach nearly a year ago. During this period, he was in serious talks with both Nigeria and Latvia but ultimately rejected both offers.

Nigeria approached Andersson after Finidi George resigned as head coach following a short stint with the team. Although discussions were held, no agreement was reached, and Andersson has now shared more details about his decision.

Speaking to Swedish newspaper Hallandsposten, as reported by Fotbollskanalen, Andersson confirmed that he had received several offers during the year.

“I have had many inquiries. Some I said no to, and others I listened to, but they didn’t go anywhere. I received two serious offers from Latvia and Nigeria, but I chose to reject them,” Andersson explained.

Regarding the Super Eagles’ offer, the former coach of Halmstad and IFK Norrköping explained why he said no.

“Nigeria was very persistent and wanted me to take the job. There were many appealing aspects, but the overall situation wasn’t perfect. It didn’t feel 100 percent right, and it has to feel that way for me to fully commit,” he said.

Although Andersson remains open to future opportunities, he is cautious about his next move.

“It would take a lot for me to take on a new coaching job. I am selective and have other things going on, like mentorship and board roles,” he added.

With Andersson’s decision, Nigeria is still searching for a permanent head coach. For now, former international Augustine Eguavoen is leading the team in a caretaker role. He impressed last month with a win over Benin Republic and a draw against Rwanda, and he will guide the Super Eagles in their upcoming matches against Libya.
