Liverpool vs Aston Villa predictions

Not even Arne Slot could have imagined a start as good as this.

Many people believed succeeding Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager was the impossible job. Slot has not achieved anything yet, but he has had a near-perfect first few months at the helm. The biggest compliment you can pay him is that no one at Anfield is missing Klopp right now.

Start with the Premier League. Liverpool head into this weekend in top spot, one point clear of defending champions and title favourites Manchester City.

They have lost only once so far, a 1-0 home defeat by Nottingham Forest, and have taken seven points from meetings with Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Liverpool have the best defensive record in the division and they also rank first for expected goals difference, a statistic which measures the quality of chances a team creates and concedes.

Liverpool are also leading the way at the midway point of the Champions League league phase. They are the only side with a 100 percent record after four rounds of fixtures, with Slot’s side having put AC Milan, Bologna, RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen to the sword.

Their 4-0 thrashing of Leverkusen in midweek was arguably their most impressive display of the campaign to date.

Up against a team that went the entire 2023/24 German season without defeat, Liverpool were superior in every department. Their attack tore Leverkusen to shreds, while their defence barely gave Xabi Alonso’s men a sniff. It was a masterful showing from Liverpool.

Slot will be hoping for more of the same on Saturday. He has already put his own stamp on this Liverpool team, who have played a more measured, controlled style of football in the first few months of the season.

Slot has not completely torn up the Klopp playbook, however, and Liverpool showed plenty of their old qualities in a come-from-behind victory over Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend.

The Premier League breaks off for the November international break after the upcoming round of fixtures. Another Liverpool win would leave their supporters dreaming of a record-equalling 20th league title.

Liverpool vs Aston Villa betting tips

Liverpool will be looking to stay on top of the Premier League by beating Aston Villa on Saturday night.

Liverpool to win and under 3.5 goals

Aston Villa suffered their first Champions League setback on Wednesday. After winning each of their first three fixtures in Europe, including a famous 1-0 defeat of Bayern Munich, Villa went down 1-0 to Club Brugge.

That result means Unai Emery’s side have lost three games in a row in three different competitions. They have also won just one of their last five Premier League games.

Villa are sixth in the standings and level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea, so there is no need to overreact.

Yet they have looked a little tired of late and are struggling to produce consistent performances over 90 minutes.

Liverpool should come out on top in this one. It is worth noting, too, that every one of their eight league victories this season has featured under 3.5 goals.

Liverpool to win the first half

Liverpool have been quick out of the blocks in the first 10 games of the Premier League season.

They have the best first-half record in the division, having led six times at the interval and been behind just twice.

Aston Villa have also performed well from minutes one to 45 away from home. They and Fulham are the only teams in the division who have not been behind at the interval at an opposition stadium.

In our view, that run will end this weekend. Liverpool have the bit between their teeth and they will start quickly in front of their own fans.

Villa have been below par of late and they could have ground to make up at the start of the second period.

Luis Diaz to score any time

Luis Diaz enjoyed a strong start to the season, scoring five goals in his first six outings.

A downturn in form then followed, as the Colombia international went six appearances without finding the back of the net. But a hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen last time out announced Diaz’s return to form.

The former Porto man’s quality has been obvious for some time, but prior to 2024/25 his end product sometimes let him down. No longer.

Diaz started through the middle against Leverkusen. Given how well he did, he is set to continue in that role here.

If his performance in midweek is anything to go by, Diaz will cause Aston Villa’s centre-backs a few problems here.
