NASCAR Series Put on Hold Due to Hurricane Helene Recovery

The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race at North Wilkesboro Speedway in North Carolina has been postponed as the region continues to recover from Hurricane Helene. In a collaborative decision with local authorities, NASCAR has determined that the focus should remain on supporting the ongoing relief and recovery efforts, so have pulled out to allow emergency services to focus on this.

“The decision was made in cooperation with local authorities to ensure all local emergency resources remain dedicated to clean-up and recovery efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene,” said a NASCAR spokesperson in an official statement, via 5 Goats.

In response to the disaster, North Wilkesboro Speedway is playing a large role by acting as a collection site for relief donations. Essential supplies such as non-perishable food, cleaning supplies, and hygiene items are being gathered to support those in need.

NASCAR driver Carl Edwards, who recently drove the pace car at Kansas Speedway, has been actively involved in the recovery efforts in North Carolina. Associated with the volunteer group Operation Airdrop, Edwards is leveraging his influence and resources to bring aid to the region. Operation Airdrop uses planes and pilots to deliver necessary supplies directly to affected areas, ensuring that all funds are dedicated to the recovery.

“So, North Carolina’s done so much for me, the NASCAR community has done so much for me. NASCAR is represented well here. Greg Biffle, Cleetus McFarland, Brad Womble. For me, it’s about bringing these folks, Gideon Rescue Company,” he said, as previously reported by Newsweek Sports.

The impact of Hurricane Helene extends beyond North Carolina, affecting neighboring states like Tennessee, Georgia, and Kentucky. The broad scope of the disaster has galvanized the NASCAR community and various local groups to provide a huge amount of support.

Michael Jordan and his NASCAR team 23XI Racing have pledged a $1 million donation to support Hurricane Helene relief efforts in North Carolina. The donation will be split equally between the NC Disaster Relief Fund and Second Harvest of Metrolina, aiming to provide immediate assistance and food distribution to affected communities.

Hurricane Helene caused widespread devastation across the Gulf Coast, particularly in North Carolina. The storm resulted in at least 40 fatalities and left over 4.2 million people without power across five states. The donation from Jordan and 23XI Racing is part of a broader effort to support the long-term recovery and rebuilding process in the affected areas, with Jordan saying the following:
