Nigerians fume as Ooni of Ife unveils golden statue of First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu (Video)
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, is facing criticism after unveiling a statue of Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu.
The First Lady was in Ife to inaugurate a hostel and a 2.7-kilometer road, both donated by the Ooni to Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), which he named in her honor. During the event, she also announced a donation of N1 billion to the university and mentioned that she graduated from OAU 41 years ago.
At the ceremony, the Ooni of Ife praised Oluremi Tinubu for her role as a model for the younger generation, highlighting her achievements as the former First Lady of Lagos State. He particularly commended her for initiating the One Day Governor program, which gave secondary school students the opportunity to serve as governor for a day, inspiring youth to strive for success.
In recognition of her contributions to leadership, education, and women’s empowerment, the Ooni of Ife commissioned a golden statue in her honor, which was unveiled on October 11th at OAU.

However, the unveiling sparked backlash from many Nigerians, who argued that the First Lady’s accomplishments were insufficient to merit such an honor.
