Ogun shuts down school, suspends principal, teacher over student’s death

The Ogun State government on Tuesday shut down Obada Grammar School in Imeko Afon Local Government Area of the State over the death of an SS2 student, Master Monday Arijo.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that Ariyo Monday, a student of the school had died after allegedly being flogged “164” strokes by a teacher for allegedly making an insulting comment to her.

The suspension comes after the teacher who was responsible for the death of the student was arrested.

The state government had also suspended the principal of the school, Tamrat Onaolapo, who had earlier issued a query for allowing corporal punishment to be used on the pupil, as against the established rules and regulations in the state.

The school’s closure was based on the directive of the state governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, who has also directed that a panel should be set up to investigate the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident.

The governor has promised that those liable by the investigation’s outcome will face the law’s full wrath.
Representatives of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology have also visited the family of the late student.
