South Africa’s coach makes 2026 World Cup qualification remark that hurts Nigeria’s hopes

South Africa’s head coach, Hugo Broos, believes his team is well-positioned to secure a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, overcoming rivals Nigeria and other Group C contenders.

The Bafana Bafana are second in the group standings with seven points, level with leaders Rwanda but trailing on goal difference. In contrast, Nigeria’s Super Eagles have struggled, sitting in fifth place with just three points after three games.

Broos, who guided South Africa to the top of Group K in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, is confident his team’s recent progress will propel them to World Cup qualification.

“We are improving as a team,” Broos said. “It doesn’t mean we are already where we need to be, but little by little, we are becoming very good. That gives us confidence for what’s ahead—the World Cup qualifiers.”

The coach added, “We have the quality and a good team. We can qualify for the World Cup, but we still need to prove it on the pitch.”

Since their semifinal exit to Nigeria at the 2023 AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire, South Africa has been unbeaten. They recently drew 1-1 with Nigeria in Uyo during a World Cup qualifier, narrowly missing out on a win.

Broos is determined to maintain the momentum as the qualifiers resume. “Our focus is on getting maximum points in our next matches against Lesotho and Zimbabwe,” he said. “If we do that, we can secure our World Cup ticket.”

The Super Eagles face an uphill battle. With six games left in the qualifiers, Nigeria must win all their remaining matches and hope other teams, including South Africa, drop points.

The qualifiers continue in March 2025, with South Africa hosting Lesotho while Nigeria travels to face Rwanda. For now, Broos and his Bafana Bafana look to build on their recent form and take a crucial step toward a return to the World Cup.
