Senate removes CCT Chairman, Danladi Umar from office

The Nigerian Senate has dismissed Danladi Umar from his position as Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

This dismissal was carried out following the necessary two-thirds majority vote from the Senators to affirm the legislative body’s decision.

The motion also accused Umar of being absent from his duties for over a month without authorization and failing to recuse himself from his role.

The lawmaker highlighted these concerning issues, among others, which led President Bola Tinubu to recommend Mr. Abdullahi Usman Bello as his successor.

The Senate Leader, Michael Opeyemi Bamidele had sponsored a motion seeking the “invocation of the provision of Section 157(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended for the removal of the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT.”

Bamidele adduced reasons for his removal saying: “Senate has been inundated with serious of petitions and allegations of corruption/misconduct against the Chairman, a situation that necessitated the 9th Senate, through the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct and Public Petitions to invite him to serious of investigative hearings.”

Following the presentation and discussions among several Senators, Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio called for a vote on the motion, resulting in 74 Senators supporting Umar’s removal, while 10 opposed it.

It was decided that the Chairman should be dismissed, and Akpabio instructed the Senate Clerk to relay the resolution to the presidency as mandated by law.
